Scottish National Party - Berwickshire Branch

Campaigning in Eyemouth in East Berwickshire

The Berwickshire Branch of the SNP was formed in 2004 following restructuring of branches in the Borders to reflect the constituency boundaries for Westminster which are on different boundaries from seats for the Scottish Parliament.

An important consideration has been the size of the constituency and the need to ensure that attending meetings is as cost effective for members as is possible.

In Berwickshire, we now work alongside our colleagues in Roxburgh and Selkirkshire branches to campaign at Scottish Parliament elections and Westminster elections.

The recent local elections held under proportional representation for the first time saw a contingent of 6 SNP councillors elected across the Borders and the SNP now forms the main opposition to the ruling Lib Dem/Tory/Independent Council.

SNP Group leader on SBC, Councillor Donald Moffat, Mid Berwickshire

In Berwickshire, popular Councillor Donald Moffat (left) was elected to serve in Mid-Berwickshire on 26% of the vote, and has since been appointed SNP Group Leader at Scottish Borders Council.

Aileen Orr narrowly missed out in election, but gathered more than 700 first preferences and 500 second preference votes in the process, with the feedback in Eyemouth in particular being very positive.

Traditionally the party has always been very active in areas such as Coldstream, but we are stepping up activity in the East Berwickshire ward, having been buoyed by coming very close to winning a council seat there for the first time and winning considerable backing from local small and medium sized businesses and the community at large.

We have already gained membership following the success of the May 2007 Scottish Parliament Elections and are actively looking for further new members in the East Berwickshire area with a view to forming a branch for the ward. We are confident that we can win a council seat in the ward in 2012 when the next council elections are likely to be held.
