On Tory candidate attempts to mislead voters on voting trends
in the Berwickshire News, March 2007
Sir,
Tory candidate John Lamont really has exposed the ignorance of
the Scottish Tories to the realities of Scotland as a nation with
its own economy, culture, political structures and traditions,
whether they be for those born here or new Scots, like me, who
choose to live in Scotland.
After 8 years of a devolved administration in Scotland, his party
has failed to adapt to political climate change, but to compound
matters, Mr Lamont and his colleagues now would appear incapable of
reading the thermometer even when faced with extinction.
His most recent newsletter, dealing with a dental crisis created
by his own party's cuts to university dental schools, cites opinion
poll figures for the whole of the UK to suggest the Tories are
leading the race up here and makes no recognition of Scotland's main
opposition, the SNP. In a spirit of charity, I would like to
indicate to Mr Lamont that as of February 2007 (ICM Scotsman poll),
the SNP are some ahead in the polls in Scotland with 34% of
constituency votes, Labour are behind (29%), Lib Dems are third
(17%) and Tories are on (16%). The SNP are also ahead on the second
list vote, at 32% versus 27% for Labour, and are our best chance of
ejecting Jack McConnell and Labour from office, unlike the Tories
who may support a minority Labour administration.
Is it too much to expect that while he is spending an absolute
fortune on literature, that Mr Lamont might actually add to voters
knowledge rather than disguise the truth? If he is elected, we have
at least been warned what standard to expect from him.
Yours faithfully
Paul Wheelhouse |
