On continued stream of misleading literature from Tory candidate John Lamont and cynical attitude of Lib Dems

 the Berwickshire News, March 2007

Sir,

Two weeks ago you kindly published my letter in which I drew Tory John Lamont's attention to the fact that he had erroneously used a UK opinion poll to predict a Tory victory in the Borders, ignoring the fact they are in fourth place in all Scottish Opinion polls and the SNP lead.

I remain concerned at the brazen disregard for accuracy on his part. In today's contribution to his one-man campaign of deforestation of the Amazon, Mr Lamont again uses the same poll and highlights a hearing aid scandal. While I am not wishing to offend those genuinely affected, as I wouldn't wish the condition on anyone, perhaps Mr Lamont should invest in one himself, as he is not listening.

If he is so concerned perhaps he could reflect on his party's role in undermining the NHS, which has been continued by Labour and Lib Dems. He states "we need more dentists", when he must know the Tories axed Edinburgh's dental school; he is pictured with a petition to save Scotland's regiments, when Tories forced mergers themselves (loss of Gordon Highlanders) when the only party committed to their restoration are the SNP, in the event of Independence; he is pictured at Eyemouth (a picture from 2005) despite the Tories selling fishing down the river in 1975, again in the Thatcher years and their fisheries spokesman resigned because his leader committed a u-turn and fishing is now expendable again; he is pictured in front of a post office when his party started the ball rolling on closures in the 1990s.

Not that the Lib Dems are any better; after being chastised for the same crime in the 2005 election, they too have again resorted to the same old rubbish about it being a two horse race- have they a crystal ball? Anyone who watches the news or reads a paper knows fine well that this election is about whether Alex Salmond or Jack McConnell becomes First Minister. No one will deal with the Tories and Mr Lamont is demonstrating why that is the case.

Yours faithfully

Paul Wheelhouse
