Letter in response to call from Tory MSP for Roxburgh and Berwickshire for the SNP Government to intervene in problem of inaction by Tory controlled council to address rabbit population in Wilton Glebe, Hawick

in the Hawick News, January 2008

Sir,

I was surprised to hear John Lamont MSP on Radio Borders this morning (Monday 14th) calling for the SNP Scottish Government to force Scottish Borders Council to control rabbits on Wilton Glebe. While I agree that the problem does require attention, as uncontrolled rabbit populations can cause considerable problems, it was bizarre to hear John attacking the Council for inaction, despite its legal obligations as a landowner. Let us not forget that the Council is Tory, Lib Dem and Independent controlled.

While I welcome his conversion to being part of the opposition to that administration, surely John could try to exert influence over his Tory colleagues in the Council administration, rather than resort to megaphone diplomacy? Perhaps he could have a quiet word with the Tory deputy leader or the Tory convenor of the council? Or maybe John could apply pressure to the portfolio holder for the relevant department, who is also a Tory. Perhaps, given his embarrassment at their inaction, or his lack of influence over his colleagues, John is simply trying to pass the buck?

Yours faithfully
